Tusheti Georgia

Tusheti, Georgia

I hiked in Tusheti in the summer of 2016. It is a little known valley world in the north east corner of Georgia, accessible only in the summer using the highest unmade road in Europe. To the north of the valley is the 4,000m barrier of Caucasus mountains separating Tusheti from Chechnya. The locals are almost all family. They pasture their cattle, sheep and horses in the valley. In winter they herd their animals south over the pass, and return in the spring. Only a few diehards stay in the valley in winter, surviving somehow in metres of snow. Although nominally Christian, they also observe older traditions, such as areas where only men are allowed.

The grass is startlingly green, the sky clear blue, and the water and air are so pure that you can almost taste it.
