About Jerusalem Nights

Jerusalem Nights was a project to capture the changes in light, form, and perspective that occur outdoors at night in an urban environment. I set out to photograph the areas around my home in Baka, Jerusalem. The principle was that all places were within walking distance. Partly so I could record them sympathetically. But mainly it was pragmatic. If I got the shot wrong, I could go back. So I spent a winter walking my neighbourhood. My first discovery was that pictures of a city without people did not make sense. So I went back and looked for people. People move. Since my shots had to be handheld and at night, I took a lot of blurry pictures. But I continued and enjoyed the results.

At night the light is different. Shapes, colours, and shadows change. The light makes mysteries of people.

Who are these people?

What are they doing?

Where are they going?
