I visited Auschwitz on my way to hike in Slovakia, the High Tatras. Like everyone I suppose, it is hard to assimilate the camp. Outside the entrance it is a zoo: coaches, people, ice-creams, souvenir store, public bathrooms…
Inside it is strange. It was both realistic and sanitized. I tried, as best I could, to look into the history, past the sanitization, with my pictures. The transition from black and white to colour is an attempt to capture the two times of the history, then and now.
There are no people in these photos. I avoided them or took them out with photoshop. Because the people who should be there have been gone for 75 years.
